I expect lots of new readers today. We hit a few great sales and met some friendly folks. Throughout the day my enthusiasm bordered on hysteria.
First, a shout out to Bill, the St. Clair County Senior Idol who is our first ever yardsale blog performer. Here we are modeling the patriotic scarf I bought from him for just 37 cents.
And here is Bill in all his glory. I'm sorry you're sideways, Bill:
Next you get to meet Cynthia. Cynthia is moving to a cool new apartment and decided to liquidate. She used to own a western-themed store and owns many delightful cowgirl boots in just my size!
These are the boots I bought. Here I am modeling them in her mirror ($3 or best offer, the mirror, not the boots) as I sing "Boot Scootin' Boogie". They are expensive, leather, snappy, and soft. But bad news... they were $30 firm. I was happy to pay that price (having paid full price for other, less exciting boots from Zappos!) but there were also these patriotic boots I wanted. See them there, demurely peeking out from behind the big brown boots?
What to do?? It was a serious conundrum. Thirty bucks for a good pair of flashy boots is ok. I can sell that to the husband. But two pairs of boots which are equally spectacular? I know he would get that grumpy face he sometimes gets if I admitted to such bold and flagrant frittering of the family funds. (I know what you are thinking... just don't admit it. But ours is not that sort of marriage, Reader. Shame on you for suggesting such behavior in which I would never ever participate.) So I did what any girl would do, whined until my mom offered to buy them for me. HA! Not really. I was close to walking away and my mom offered to buy them for my birthday (which is July 7, by the way.) Hooray! THANKS MOM!
Then I bought her some gum at QT to make me feel less like a mooch. Here's Louie at the QT. He's not in school because he graduated 8th grade this week and once you get the diploma they can't make you attend class I guess. The taquitos were excellent as usual.
We had a lovely time on Crystal Ct. at an estate sale run by the daughters of the home owner who has moved into a senior living facility. The owner is obviously quite a gamer! We bought Scattergories, Pictionary, Triple Yahtzee, magnetic backgammon, and some 3D Scrabble game we'd never seen before. If these are the games you didn't take with you to your new digs... what did you bring? This lady must be a serious hustler in the new place. Look out seniors!
At this sale Louie bought a cool clock from Brookstone. Mom got some kitchen apparatus. I bought a set of knives. Louie got a stuffed animal. I bought a cutting board. You know when you are traveling along the interstates and you stop to gas up and you check out the gift shop as you wait in line for the bathroom? You know those magnets of the states that are in the shape of the state? At this sale we bought a complete set of 50-plus magnets. I think we even got Puerto Rico! I gave them to Betty because she is cuckoo for magnets. And honestly I think she needs the help with geography.
I'm inserting something excellent from yesterday in Alton. After we met Mr. Rubenstein and poured through his dirty junk, we hit a few antique stores in town. I bought my mom a cool little metal hand thing for three bucks. Then I found this retro chair which is the sister to the kick-A orange chair of an earlier post. (Go ahead. Go back in the archives and find it. It's THAT pretty!) The white chair was marked $45 but she agreed to take $36. I bought it with a guilty conscience because that is a lot of moola, Mister! But then at the McDonalds drive-thru, as I was about to for over $8 for some milkshakes for Mom, Louie, and me, my mom offered to pay for the milkshakes! That's $8 off the price of the chair, the way we figured it. And then she paid me back $3 for the cool little metal hand -- so the gorgeous white chair was only $25! Then at dinner time I really really wanted to take the whole family out to eat, but instead channeled the guilt from the chair purchase into the making of a home-cooked spaghetti dinner. More money saved! (Matt, if you are reading this, I think somehow we came out ahead, Honey!)
Tomorrow we return to Soulard for their do-over yardsale. I will be on a strict budget after these couple days of treasure finding. Pray for sun and low prices!
